8 Signs It's Time to Redesign Your Website

By Elite Mercato TeamPublished October 22, 20263 min read

Websites age faster than most businesses expect. A site that looked modern five years ago can now feel slow, awkward on phones and out of step with what your business offers. A redesign is a real investment, so it helps to know when it is worth doing. Here are eight signs it is time.

1. It is hard to use on a phone

Most visitors now arrive on a mobile device. If people have to pinch and zoom, buttons are too small to tap or menus do not open properly, many of them will leave. Open your site on your own phone and try to do the main thing a customer would do, such as find a service and get in touch. If it feels clumsy, your customers feel it too.

2. It loads slowly

Visitors expect pages to appear in a couple of seconds. Slow sites lose enquiries and tend to rank lower in search. Heavy images, outdated code and too many plugins are common causes. Sometimes these can be fixed without a full redesign, but if the site is slow everywhere, the foundations may need rebuilding.

3. It no longer matches your business

Businesses change. You may have new services, new prices, a new logo or a different target market. If your website still describes the business you were, visitors get the wrong picture. Your website should be the clearest, most up-to-date explanation of what you do.

4. It does not bring in enquiries

A website should do a job: bring in calls, bookings, quote requests or sales. If you get visitors but very few of them contact you, the problem is often the structure. Calls to action may be unclear, the contact form may be hidden, or the pages may not answer the questions buyers have.

5. You cannot update it yourself

If changing a phone number or adding a photo means waiting days for a developer, the site gets out of date. Modern websites can give you an easy way to edit everyday content, whether through WordPress or a simple editing area on a custom-built site.

6. It looks dated

Design trends are not everything, but first impressions matter. Old fonts, cramped layouts, low-quality images and mismatched colours make a business look less trustworthy than it really is. Visitors often judge your service by the quality of your website.

7. It has security or technical problems

Warning messages in the browser, a missing padlock, outdated plugins that can no longer be updated, or a site that breaks after every update are serious signs. An insecure site puts your visitors and your reputation at risk.

8. Your competitors have moved ahead

Look at the websites of businesses you compete with. If theirs are faster, clearer and easier to use, potential customers are comparing you side by side and may be choosing them before they ever speak to you.

How to redesign without losing rankings

A redesign should improve your search visibility, not damage it. Before you start:

  • List every page that gets traffic today, using Google Search Console or your analytics.
  • Keep important pages and their content, and improve them rather than deleting them.
  • If any web addresses change, set up redirects from old URLs to the matching new pages.
  • Keep titles, headings and descriptions relevant to what people search for.
  • Test the new site fully before launch. Our website launch checklist covers what to check.
