Shopify vs WooCommerce for US Stores: Which Should You Choose?

By Elite Mercato TeamPublished October 28, 20263 min read

Shopify and WooCommerce are two of the most popular ways to sell online. Our general Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison covers the basics. This guide looks at the choice from a US store's point of view: sales tax, American payment methods, shipping, accessibility and total cost in dollars.

Sales tax handling

US sales tax is complicated because rules differ by state and depend on where you have nexus. Shopify includes tax tools, and Shopify Tax can calculate rates at checkout for US merchants. WooCommerce relies on plugins or third-party services for accurate rates. Both can work well, but Shopify is usually simpler to set up correctly. Either way, confirm your obligations with an accountant.

US payment options

American shoppers expect fast checkouts. Shopify offers Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal, plus buy now, pay later options such as Afterpay and Klarna. WooCommerce supports the same methods through plugins such as WooPayments, Stripe and PayPal. Shopify's built-in checkout tends to need less setup and maintenance.

Shipping in the US

Both platforms connect to USPS, UPS and FedEx. Shopify Shipping provides discounted labels for many US carriers inside the admin. WooCommerce needs shipping plugins or services such as ShipStation for similar features.

Website accessibility claims are common in the US. Neither platform makes a store accessible automatically; it depends on the theme, content and how the store is built. Choose a well-built theme, add alt text and test with a keyboard and screen reader whichever platform you use.

Total cost in dollars

WooCommerce itself is free, but you pay for hosting, security, backups, premium plugins and developer time for updates. Shopify charges a monthly plan and, for some payment setups, transaction fees, but hosting, security and updates are included. For many small US stores the total cost is similar; the bigger difference is how much technical work you want to manage. See our guide to Shopify development cost in the USA.

Practical example: two US stores

Example: a Florida supplement brand with a small team and no developer wants to launch quickly with Afterpay and simple sales tax: Shopify is usually the better fit. A Colorado outdoor blog that already runs on WordPress and earns most of its income from content wants to add a small shop: WooCommerce can make sense because it keeps everything in one WordPress site.

Which should a US store choose?

  • Choose Shopify if you want simple sales tax, fast checkout, less maintenance and room to grow.
  • Choose WooCommerce if you already run on WordPress, want full control and have developer support.
