How to Start a Shopify Store: A Step-by-Step Guide

By Elite Mercato Team · Published 2026-10-03

Starting a Shopify store is easier than it has ever been, but a store that actually sells needs more than a theme and a few products. This guide walks through the steps in the order that makes sense, so you avoid the most common launch mistakes.

1. Decide what you are selling and to whom

Before you open any account, get clear on three things: the product, the customer and the reason someone would buy from you instead of a bigger store. A narrow, specific niche is usually easier to market than "everything for everyone". Check that real people are searching for what you plan to sell, and look at competitors to see how they present and price similar products.

2. Create your store and choose a plan

Sign up on Shopify, pick a store name and choose a plan that fits your stage. You can start small and upgrade later. Set your store currency, time zone and contact email early, because several settings are harder to change after orders start coming in.

3. Pick a theme and set up the basics

Choose a clean, fast, mobile-friendly theme rather than a heavy one packed with effects. Add your logo, colors and fonts, then set up the pages every store needs:

4. Add products properly

Product pages decide whether visitors buy. For each product, write a clear title, a useful description that answers likely questions, sharp photos from several angles, and accurate variants and pricing. Avoid copying supplier descriptions word for word, since duplicate text can hurt search visibility.

5. Set up payments, taxes and shipping

Connect a payment gateway available in your country, configure taxes for the regions you sell to, and set shipping rates that you can actually afford. Be upfront about delivery times. Surprise shipping costs at checkout are one of the biggest reasons people abandon carts.

6. Install only the apps you need

Apps can add reviews, email capture, upsells and more, but each one can add weight to your store. Start with a short list of essentials and remove anything you are not using.

7. Cover the SEO basics before launch

8. Test, then launch

Place a test order, check the mobile layout, read every page for mistakes and test your contact forms. Then remove any password protection and launch. After launch, watch your analytics, collect customer feedback and improve one thing at a time.
