How to Speed Up Your Shopify Store: 10 Practical Fixes

By Elite Mercato Team · Published 2026-10-03

Speed matters in e-commerce. Visitors on a phone will not wait around for a slow page, and search engines take page experience into account. Here are ten practical places to look when a Shopify store feels slow.

1. Measure first

Test your key pages with a tool such as Google PageSpeed Insights, and test on mobile, not just desktop. Write down your starting scores so you can tell whether each change helps. Test the home page, a collection page and a product page, since they behave differently.

2. Compress and resize images

Oversized images are the most common cause of slow stores. Resize photos to the size they are actually displayed, compress them, and use modern formats where your theme supports them. Do not upload a huge original and rely on the browser to shrink it.

3. Audit your apps

Every installed app can add scripts that load on each page. List all your apps and ask which ones earn their place. Remove those you do not use, and check that uninstalled apps have not left code behind in your theme.

4. Choose a lightweight theme

Heavy themes with many animations and sliders slow everything down. A simple, well-built theme usually performs better, and a clean layout often converts better too.

5. Reduce sliders, videos and pop-ups

Auto-playing videos, large carousels and several pop-ups competing for attention all add load time and annoy visitors. Keep what truly helps and cut the rest.

6. Limit fonts

Each font family and weight is another file to download. Stick to one or two families and only the weights you use.

7. Lazy-load below-the-fold content

Images and sections that are not visible at first do not need to load immediately. Lazy loading lets the top of the page appear quickly while the rest loads as people scroll.

8. Clean up theme code

Old code left behind by removed apps or past edits can add weight. A developer can review the theme, remove unused code and tidy up scripts that block the page from rendering.

9. Keep collections and pages reasonable

Very long collection pages with hundreds of products on one page are slow. Use pagination and filters so visitors load only what they need.

10. Re-test and keep monitoring

After each change, test again and compare with your starting numbers. Speed tends to slip as new apps and content are added, so check regularly.
