How to Build a Holiday Gift Guide That Sells and Ranks

By Elite Mercato TeamPublished November 3, 20263 min read

Every December, millions of people search things like "gifts for dad who has everything" or "gifts under $50". Most of them aren't looking for a particular product. They want someone to help them choose.

A good gift guide does exactly that. It's one of the few pages on an online store that can bring in new visitors from Google and turn them into buyers in the same visit. And yet most stores either skip it or throw together a collection page called "Gifts" with forty random products.

Here's how to do it properly.

Pick who the gift is for, not what it is

People search by the person they're buying for, not by your product categories. "Gifts for her", "gifts for coffee lovers", "gifts for new homeowners". Start with two or three groups that genuinely fit what you sell. One focused guide beats five thin ones.

Add price ranges

Budget is usually the first filter in a gift buyer's head. Sections like "Under $25", "Under $50" and "Something special" make the page instantly easier to use. They also match how people search, which helps the page show up for those searches.

Write a reason for every product

This is the part most stores skip, and it's the part that sells. Under each product, add one or two sentences explaining who it's perfect for and why. "Great for the friend who always forgets their water bottle" is far more helpful than a copied product description. It also gives Google real, useful text to read, which a plain product grid doesn't.

Our guide to writing product descriptions that sell has more on this.

Keep the list short

Ten to twenty hand-picked products per guide is plenty. Too many choices and people give up. If you sell a lot, make separate guides rather than one endless page.

Build it as a proper page

On Shopify, you can build a gift guide as a page or a blog post with product blocks, or as a collection with a written introduction at the top. Whichever you choose, give it:

  • A clear title that matches what people search, such as "Gifts for Coffee Lovers: 15 Ideas Under $50".
  • A short introduction explaining who the guide is for.
  • Headings for each price range or recipient.
  • Good images, add-to-cart buttons, and delivery cut-off dates near the top.
  • A simple URL you can reuse every year, like /gift-guide or /gifts-for-coffee-lovers.

Publish it early, and reuse it

Google needs time to find and rank a new page, so a gift guide published on December 15 won't do much this year. Get it live in early November if you can. Then, crucially, keep the same URL next year and simply update the products. A page that's been around for a few seasons tends to rank much better than a new one each December.

Link to it from your home page, menu and emails so both shoppers and Google can find it. Our e-commerce SEO checklist covers the other basics.

Frequently asked questions

When should I publish a holiday gift guide?

Ideally in October or early November, so Google has time to find and rank it before peak shopping weeks.

How many products should a gift guide have?

Ten to twenty hand-picked products per guide usually works best. Make several focused guides rather than one huge list.

Should I make a new gift guide page every year?

It is usually better to keep the same URL and update the products each year, because older pages tend to rank better.
