How to Get Your Products Shown in ChatGPT Shopping Answers

By Elite Mercato TeamPublished November 6, 20263 min read

A growing number of shoppers now start with a question instead of a search: "What's a good waterproof hiking backpack under $100?" They ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, and get a short list of products with links.

If you run an online store, the obvious question is: how do I get on that list? Nobody outside these companies knows exactly how the lists are chosen, and the features keep changing. But the basics are clear, and most of them are things that also help you on Google.

How AI assistants find products

When an assistant searches the web, it reads pages much like a search engine does: product pages, reviews, comparison articles, forum threads and structured product data. It then tries to answer the question in plain language. So it favours products whose pages clearly say what the product is, who it's for, what it costs and whether it's in stock.

OpenAI has also been building shopping and checkout features with partners such as Shopify and Etsy. Rules and availability change often, so check OpenAI's merchant information and your Shopify admin for what's available to your store right now.

Let AI crawlers read your store

Start with the simple part. Make sure your robots.txt isn't blocking the crawlers these tools use, such as OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. Shopify's default robots file is usually fine, but apps and custom edits sometimes block more than intended. Our guide on getting found in AI search explains this in more detail.

Write product pages that answer questions

People ask AI tools specific questions: "Is it machine washable?", "Will it fit a 15-inch laptop?", "Is it good for beginners?". If your product page answers those questions in plain words, an assistant can match your product to them. If the page only says "premium quality, stylish design", it can't.

  • Say who the product is for in the first two lines.
  • List real sizes, materials, weights and compatibility.
  • Add a short FAQ to your best sellers, using the questions customers actually email you.
  • Keep the title descriptive: brand, product type and the main feature.

Keep your product data clean

Most Shopify themes add product structured data (price, availability, reviews) automatically, but it's worth checking with Google's Rich Results Test. Wrong prices or "in stock" on sold-out items confuse both Google and AI tools. A clean product feed in Google Merchant Center helps too, because the same data travels to many places. See our Google Shopping product feed guide.

Earn mentions outside your own site

AI assistants lean heavily on what other people say about a product: reviews, gift guides, Reddit threads, YouTube reviews and comparison articles. You can't fake that, but you can encourage it. Ask happy customers for reviews, send samples to relevant bloggers, and answer questions honestly in communities where your customers hang out.

Check how you appear

Once a month, ask a few AI assistants the questions your customers would ask, and note whether your products or competitors show up. Use a private or temporary chat so your own history doesn't skew the answer. It's a rough test, but it shows you which product pages need work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT shopping results?

OpenAI has said its product results are not paid placements. The practical route is clear product pages, accurate product data and genuine reviews and mentions across the web.

Does Shopify work with ChatGPT shopping?

OpenAI and Shopify have announced shopping and checkout integrations. Availability depends on your country and store setup, so check your Shopify admin and OpenAI's merchant pages for current details.

Will this also help my Google rankings?

Yes. Clear product pages, accurate structured data, fast loading and real reviews are the same things Google uses to rank product pages.
